What is Wave 1?

Your first step into the freediving world

Freediving is the art of exploring the ocean on a single breath โ€” calm, quiet and completely present. The Wave 1 โ€“ Beginner Freediving course is your internationally-recognised entry point, teaching the breathwork, technique and safety that let you dive deeper and stay down longer, safely.

By the end of the course you'll be a certified freediver, ready to keep exploring.

  • Act as a qualified buddy for other certified freedivers

The Course

Two days, three sessions

A relaxed, structured progression โ€” from the classroom, to confined water, to your first guided dives in the ocean.

Covering all the ins and outs of freediving โ€” how your body adapts, breathing and relaxation techniques, safety, and the fundamentals that keep every dive safe.

Get comfortable in the water โ€” practising finning technique, static and dynamic breath holds, and how to use your freediving gear in a calm, controlled setting.

Head out by boat to put it all together โ€” working on depth, breath holds, buddying, safety and rescue skills, and your first real ocean freedives alongside your instructor.

Theory

  • Understand the basics of freediving physiology & physics
  • Master pre-dive breathing and recovery breathing
  • Know the freediving disciplines and equipment
  • Comfortably hold your breath for 1'30"

Pool

  • Swim 30m with fins using proper technique (DYNB)
  • Learn to move horizontally without fins (DNF)
  • Safety and rescue a freediver at the surface

Depth

  • Duck-dive efficiently from the surface
  • Dive 12โ€“20m on a single breath (CWTB & FIM)
  • Buddy and rescue a freediver at depth

Before you book

  • Be able to swim 200m non-stop and unassisted

Brett Davison

Freediving Instructor · Scuba Divemaster

Brett has been spearfishing and freediving for over 23 years, and a freediving instructor and Scuba Divemaster for 18 of them. Originally from the Central Coast of NSW, he's always had a deep love and passion for the ocean โ€” exploring countless locations around Australia and across the world throughout his diving career.

He's just as passionate about underwater hunting and sustainable spearfishing, with more than 20 years' experience in the field. Brett has also worked extensively in the breathwork realm, teaching advanced breathing and breath-hold techniques, and has run freediving training at multiple locations up the east coast of Australia.

Above all, Brett is driven to teach โ€” to share the underwater world with anyone keen to explore it.
